In early 2025, Sambu Group was unfortunately forced to lay off a number of workers due to a coconut shortage that had lasted for months. Both PT Pulau Sambu in Guntung and PT RSUP in Pulau Burung, as part of the Sambu Group, were forced to make workforce efficiencies, as production was below capacity. In an effort to maintain local economic stability and the sustainability of the coconut industry in Indragiri Hilir and surrounding areas, Sambu Group has affirmed its commitment to remain operational despite the uncertainty of coconut supplies. This decision was taken as a strategic step to prevent the threat of worsening local economic conditions and the entire supply chain that depends on the coconut industry.
A. Ginting, Public Relations Officer of Sambu Group, stated that the company continues to seek the best solutions to maintain coconut supplies despite facing various challenges. "We understand the importance of the industry's sustainability for the local economy and Indragiri Hilir in general. Therefore, Sambu Group is committed to continuing to absorb coconut yields from local farmers and making efforts to buy from various other sources. So no matter how much, coconut supplies remain available, and the factory can continue to produce," he said.
However, Sambu Group realizes that coconut supplies may not be stable in the next few months. "This is due to uncertain weather changes and global conditions. Coconut scarcity could continue due to the impact of the previous long dry season. So even though there is an increase in coconut shipments at this time, it cannot be predicted that it will be the same in the next few months. Coconut supply to the factory still faces uncertainty," Ginting continued.
In the face of fluctuating coconut supplies, the company must be able to take effective and efficient action. Including when there is a surge in coconut shipments suddenly, after a period of supply scarcity. "The company must be able to adapt quickly, including if it is necessary to add workers, to match the high absorption of coconuts, so that they can be produced and not neglected," Ginting continued.
If there is an increase in coconut supply, especially ahead of Ramadan and Eid, the company may take short-term measures, including recruiting temporary (monthly) workers. In this condition, recruitment will be carried out by the Sambu Group directly, without involving manpower outsourcing companies. "This is a short-term and temporary solution, including offering back (recalling) previously laid-off workers if needed," Ginting explained. This decision to remain operational is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, especially in an effort to create jobs and reduce unemployment. As well as the continuity of other coconut supply chains.
"We certainly hope that this difficult condition can pass quickly and coconut supplies can return to normal soon. So that we can again absorb workers as before, and the company as a labor-intensive industry, can make the best contribution to regional development and the Indonesian coconut ecosystem," concluded A Ginting.
